Crossing The Line
There are two songs on this blogsite which you can listen to. The first one is the new praise song i played last week during Indon svc and the other one is the new praise song for the following week which was played yesterday~ Both are by Harvest Praise Ministries in Indonesia :D
Now how do i even begin to blog proper... hmm.. well ok, so i played for indon svc again yesterday and well i must say dat i totally messed up quite bad. right from the start i did a big mistake and dat was it.. the thing spiralled downward from bad to worse. I totally mixed up the intros of the first and second praise song and both songs were totally different in terms of tempo and playing style.. one was moderately slow with a funky feel and the other was more uptempo with a hard rock feel to it.. How i messed it up was easy.. i merely played the intro of the hard rock one (the 2nd praise song) at a fast tempo rather than the other song.
Well, i realised it of cos, but it was REAALLY glaringly obvious i had played wrongly... and man after dat i just lost all my focus and concentration.. To cut the long story short, at the post svc briefing, i got admonished and all as expected. I was disappointed, utterly disappointed but yet through this one svc, i'd learn many things about playing in a music team.
I've realised the problem and the cause of it. Dat Sunday, i was physically tired because i had slept pretty late the previous night. Not having enough sleep, my mind was not sharp at all and my limbs refused to budge no matter wat my mind was telling it to. Almost seemed like i was in delay effect.. my mind sending out signals only to have my body respond like some centuries later. But it was all my fault for not getting enough rest when i had ought to.
I've learnt the following:
1. Musicians in CHC, listen up - As a musician, my role is of extreme importance because I am part of a team helping to usher in the presence of God for the congregation to worship. And this requires loads of focus and initiation and alertness. Having a lack of sleep, I compromised dat by not being physically and mentally prepared. And as a result, it affected the congregation and dat is a serious mistake. It is of utmost importance dat a musician in a worship team play his or her part in a way dat will serve the congregation instead of obstructing or distracting their focus on God during Praise & Worship. Mistakes, glaring or otherwise are killers to a conducive atmosphere. So do everything you can to be well prepared.
2. Don't be afraid to try new things and be led to play in a certain manner during P&W. If you feel led by the Spirit to build up a song etc etc then don't be afraid of doing it because the team will pick up from it and flow along. Flowing with your fellow musicians and worship leader is something dat is reciprocal. It's like a give and take kinda thing, where it's not always the worship leader giving instructions. Flow is all about a team effort and the strength of its unity.
3. If you've made a mistake during P&W, DON'T DWELL ON IT! MOVE ON! Dat was one of the most impt things i learnt during yesterday's svc. I was too affected by my first blumming mistake and i couldnt shake it off. Dat is a killer man i tell u.. It takes great capacity as a person to make a big mistake and just forget it and move on, cos it's not easy to not get affected. How do you expand your capacity then? Simple, by learning from your mistakes. The best way is to learn through bad experience to never make the same mistakes twice!
4. When you feel you're at the end of the rope, CRY OUT TO GOD IN PRAYER! I tell you man, sometimes during a song i get so distracted and unfocused dat all i can do is just really cry out to God, speaking in tongues and just keep praying hard! When distraction comes creeping in, you just gotta bind it in Jesus' name! Bind it, and quickly focus hard on the Holy Spirit. And use common sense! When you are lost, play the necessary minimal and quickly focus on key personnel in the band (example, the band leader) and the worship leader for directions.
Yeap, indeed when the righteous fall 7 times, each time they pick themselves up and move on! Dat is key to a greater capacity - picking up from where you left off and keep moving forward. Over time you will really find how much you have grown. So, yea start crossing dat line already!
