Smoke Gets In Your Eyes
Yea i was listening to this by yet again one of my fav saxophonists David Sanborn. it's the smooth, slow ballady type of jazz get wat i mean? Yea and i was listenin to how he improvised the parts of the song, try to break it up into parts and understand why he played certain passages this way and dat~
And then you'll realise dat there's more to music than just good sound to the ears, each time i listen to a particular song, i seem to find new sounds and dynamics emerging from it~ and dat's the beauty of music cos each piece doesnt sound the same as the other and within the same piece, it can sound a variety of ways~
And to digress a little, i think i've realised my habit of using '~' almost each time i end a sentence~ see? there i go again~ anyway yea back to the topic.
Music improvisation is interesting, very, and in particular, jazz improvisation which i must say is probably one of the hardest forms of music to improvise on. Things get really exciting when u somehow happen to chance upon a certain chord or note which can either kill your piece or make it soar~ i was just wonderin bout the emotional/psychological or watever effects dat certain notes and chords have on ppl when played. i think there must be many studies done on this~ all i know is dat certain notes and chords in hymns in the olden times were disallowed simply because they were deemed as 'diabolic'. If i remember correctly, the church did not take too well to Bach's music? well at least some i think~ if i'm not wrong, they considered his music somewat deviant.. but how much music has evolved from back in the classical days right up till now is really astounding~ makes an interesting Honours paper no? heh~
Alright here's the song in lyrics~ but i really recommend the Sanborn version of it. Pure instrumental sax~ Maybe someday i'll come up with my own good piece of work~
They asked me how I knew
My true love was true
I of course replied
Something here inside
Cannot be denied
They said someday youll find
All who love are blind
When youre hearts on fire
You must realize
Smoke gets in your eyes
So I chaffed them and I gaily laughed
To think they could doubt my love
Yet today my love has flown away
I am without my love
Now laughing friends deride
Tears I cannot hide
So I smile and say
When a lovely flame dies
Smoke gets in your eyes
Smoke gets in your eyes
